Cliff lunges into the beast! Critical strike!
Hint: Critical strikes are not chance based usually. Most attacks have a 0% chance of critically hitting. Only after successful parries, do attacks have a critical strike chance, or attacking stunned, surprised or prone foes. If you are in Skirmish Defense and move to the foe's rear when they are already engaged with another foe, then you can also have a critical strike chance. In this instance, the target was stunned, thus the critical strike chance is 100%.
[ 11 damage ]
The beast falls over as it snarls for only a short moment.
Go, Smith.
Initiative
[ Smith ] [ Swarthun ] [ Cliff ]
Log
Cliff attacks a stunned foe. [100 default] Opponent rolled defense, 11 damage.

Any blacksmith can be flawless, but only a master smith can turn flaws into success.Just as the thought crosses my mind, I begin to feel more confident, as though my limbs were suddenly relieved of their previous encumberance. Memories flow with the action, and I feel a rush of thoughts flooding forth, watching flames dance in front of my eyes as sparks fly from red iron and molten crucibles fill channels with orange and yellow fire. The hammering sets a tempo in my mind, and this timing both stirs me to action and holds me to patience. Feeling the latter to be the appropriate action, I wait for the beast to strike before making my move. [Action: Delay -> Demon Dog]

[ Cliff ] [ Smith ] - Delay [ Swarthun ] Log
Swarthun's roll was below Cliff's Block Threshold. Seeing the devil dog rebound off of Cliff's shield, I seize the moment to lunge in at the beast, swinging the hammer as I move in for the attack. [Action: Skirmish defense, move to the Swarthun's rear arc and attack with the hammer]

Smith strikes with the hammer and although the dog manages to crouch in a defensive position, the hammer disorients the dog.
[ 2 damage ]
Hint: Certain weapons stagger more than others. A weapon's weight plus damage type determines that. Staggered opponents provoke a critical strike chance.
Go, Cliff.

I pause, letting my breath slow as I stare down at the slain beasts, then look at my bloody sword. My hand trembling somewhat, I mutter to myself, "And, whatever happens, never forget to wipe your sword, son of Adam."
Kneeling, I clean the blood from my sword on the swarthun's fur, then sheathe it and pick up my pike, turning to Smith.
"I've never killed anything bigger than a spider before. I'm not sure I like the feeling."
I peer through the windows of the house, looking for the source of the movement, pike ready to catch anything that springs out at me.
