I pull back and speak to Smith once again. "I think we should be able to make it to that farmhouse. Let's stay behind the ruins and stay quiet, see if we can skirt the creature." I nod in approval to Cliff as he returns, aware of the imminent threat should we fail. Peering into the darkness, I can only see vague shapes in the distance, directing my senses more on instinct than actual perception.

You leave your the smith as the fiend passes by and stealthily move toward the farm. As you move toward the farm you see the tower seems to be forgotten, no one keep watching anymore... but who is surprised?
The fields are barren and covered in a muddy later of water as you see several other farmhouses, some standing less than the one you are currently at. You see inside of the building a light... a fire. Someone has lit a fire inside of the farmhouse!
[ Perception ] You hear something move from behind the watchtower.

I turn and point my pike toward the watchtower.
"Did you hear that?"
I peer into the shadows looking for the source of the noise.

I turn and point my pike toward the watchtower. "Did you hear that?" I peer into the shadows looking for the source of the noise. Shadows moving...Just as Cliff speaks, I hold a hand up, a forbidding gesture, and cover my mouth with my hand. Then, beckoning with the same hand, I crouch low and attempt to circumvent the watchtower in favor of heading towards the farmhouse. Before passing around the corner, however, curiosity gets the best of me, and I ferret a glance towards the sound of shifting shadows. ... beckon only death.

DunkelbergSmith moves to the farmhouse and as Cliff peers around the watchtower, shadows move again! Two creatures leap out and attack! These dark creatures have long black fur and stand on all fours, gnarled tusks, sharp fangs and pointed ears with glowing green eyes. They stand no more than three feet tall to the shoulder but seem very fast! Cliff and Smith are not surprised by the attempted ambush. [ Perception ] Cliff, you may take action. Hint: You wield a pike which allows you options at reach. You must select a type of defense each round: normally Phalanx, Robust, Skirmish or Parry. The Pike allows the Schiltron option of defense option. - Phalanx - You take reduced accuracy or even no attacks but raise your defense. Anyone adjacent to you ALSO gains this defense bonus.
- Robust - You defend with shield first, as long as you can, then try to use your armor and toughness to shrug the rest off.
- Skirmish - Your rely on agility to avoid blows. The more attacks you suffer in a round, the more difficult this becomes.
- Parry - You rely on dexterity to knock your opponent's attacks away. Certain attacks are too unwieldly to be parried and this defense can vary in usefulness, sometimes able to knock your opponent prone.
- Schiltron - You use a long-hafted weapon to keep your opponent at bay. Readying is much more effective in a schiltron defense and an enemy trying to use a weapon with less reach than you might grant you bonus attacks.
Hint: To attack you can declare standard attack, power attack, flurry attack or any special attacks your weapon provides. The Pike allows for a Reaching Thrust (which is actually a type of power attack).
Hint: You can declare movement, but note you have Rusted Iron Mail which reduces your speed by 16%.Initiative[ Cliff ][ Swarthun ][ Smith ][ Swarthun ]

I narrow my eyes at the oncoming creatures, tracking their movements as best as I can.
"Stay behind me, I'll try to fend them off."
Schiltron defense, ready an action to attack if one enters my reach.

The shaft is weak... it will break eventually.Cliff's words are momentarily lost on me as I focus my attention on the second beast. Surely it will try to circumvent the reach of the pike after seeing its comrade being impaled, but it is less likely to charge directly in. My hand tightens on the grip of the hammer, hoping that at least buys some time for us. "Understood... Be wary, though... I sense something... dark from these creatures," comes a delayed raspy response from my lips. [Action: Skirmish defense, ready a swing with the hammer if one of the beasts comes within reach of me]

Smith readies for a hound to charge but the second hound tries to flank Cliff! Cliff seems to be proficient with the Pike (perhaps thanks to his spirit) and strikes at the hound who enters his range but misses with the polearm! The beast lunges at Cliff and bites at his chest, blood begins to spray as he crunches against the rusted armor.
[ 1 damage ]
Hint: Cliff did not stagger from the attack due to its low damage. Armor weight, Vitality and Willpower can increase your Poise, which can prevent stagger. Stagger reduces your accuracy and defense, when stagger gets too high, you become stunned instead. Certain weapons inflict more stagger than others, depending on damage type and weight.
Hint: Cliff, you are at 27 Health
Go, Cliff!

I suck in a breath through my teeth as the hound's jaws close on my chest, dropping the pike and reaching for my sword and shield.
"Does your gem grant you any abilities that you might be able to use to drive them off or injure them?"
Drop pike, draw sword and shield. If I can attack the adjacent hound, resolute defense and do so, otherwise phalanx

Blacksmiths were always thought to be witches...I pause mentally for naught but a second as my mind processes Cliff's words. My thoughts drift to the orange gem and as they wander I suddenly realize that I do in fact know how to kindle flames. Soundless, I step closer to Cliff and swing the hammer at the devil dog. [Action: Skirmish defense, attack the wounded demon dog]
