Background:
Hundreds of years ago, the Pandem tore apart the civilization of Kellryia, leaving it to be rebuilt. The royal bloodline has been lost, and the Brothers’ Wars are over. Their followers still wage a battle, but it is nothing compared to the casualties of the Last Brothers’ War, or the Pandem. Dragontail’s ruler has been vanquished, and that nation, too has splintered into smaller fragments.
From the ashes of the old empire, the Kellryians have rebuilt society, but in the process… there was no one uniting force and it was split into twelve nations. Shallys, Kaelrin, Dalris, Kezek’Thar, Ildirin, Auzrend, Frostreach, Aldien, Valenden, Cascade, Treland and Adra. To the west, the Eladrin have rebuilt their kingdom, keeping the dwarves as close allies.
The simple village of Gothway has been a trading post in Southern Dalris for years. Wedged just south of the Kellryian Tundra, west of Kezek’Thar, also called The Badlands (or the Orc Badlands), and northeast of the Shardspine mountains, there are many trade routes in which use this to avoid the perilous terrain. Gothway has grown throughout the years, although was destroyed in the Pandem.
Dalris, however, has had an interesting turn of events. The small barony of Kellar has been utterly annihilated without any well-known reason for it to occur, mostly ghost stories and rumors. However, if you believe in those tales, it goes like this:
Tarin Kellar was not the oldest, but was elected to take sovereignty of Kellar after his father had perished. His father, Damion Kellar, was a powerful wizard, but his human heritage cursed him with a short life. His wife had passed away (whom gave birth to Wyat Kellar, the eldest of his children). Tarin had grown very enamored with an elf from Shallys and the two were lovers, granting him his next son, Tarin Kellar, and his daughter, Malyndra Kellar.
Wyat always was protective of his brother and sister, but had little incentive to talk up the wand and begin practicing his father’s art, and his father didn’t mind, although he hoped that he was merely waiting for the right time to practice.
Tarin Kellar was in love with magic the moment he saw it and began practicing even before his father had started. Become adept fairly quickly, Damion knew he would have a powerful magister as a son. Wyat elected to become a swordsman, and was soon the leader of the militia, and in time the Baron’s army. Malyndra, always happy with the success of her brothers, cheered them on, but never pursued her own desires. Many of which she left unknown.
Damion had heard of Daerictus Oltanar, or ‘The Godlands,’ a mystic island of fable-like power. Apparently where all of the deities went before their ascension (save Alton and Morell). In his old age, he dared not venture to it, but had a fairly good guess of where it might be. Tarin was determined to find it. He secretly stole his father’s notes and borrowed a ship, and with his magical prowess and a small militia, they sailed towards land uncharted.
Damion mourned the loss of his son, having been gone almost a year. Stricken by old age, Damion passed away. Wyat began his reign and waited only a few months before Tarin had returned home. Tarin was heartbroken at his father’s death, and had even retrieved an artifact from the uncharted land of ‘The Godlands.’ The artifact was fragment of some stone. Crystalline and black, it pulsed with life with veins coursing through it. Wyat was amazed, seeing nothing of the likes before, but sensed a power from it. He immediately suggested it be destroyed. Tarin feared that it truly was evil, but he desired not to leave such a powerful artifact in the land of the gods. Tarin noticed their safe passage home and how ever since he had obtained it, he was having good fortune. He thought it to be a powerful charm or ward, but it emanated a power in which he feared.
Wyat read to Tarin the news that should Tarin return, he would reign as the Baron of Keller, in which he was eager to accept. The barony was slightly agitated at the change in baron, Wyat being a pureblood human and of noble blood in both cases, and Tarin being of half-elf decent with an elven whore for a mother. …or so they called her.
Tarin had devoted his entire life to finding out how to be rid of the artifact, not wanting to leave it to be had in the hands of another. Wyat essentially ruled as he did before, sans title. Asmyndra had then fled the kingdom. Wyat had learned she and Tarin were lovers and upon his return, he had put so much devotion in his work he elected to ignore her. The scorn of the rest of the barony with her being ‘just like her mother’ was apparently too much to bear. Wyat, who had lost his sister to shame and his brother to that artifact, began to worry about the fate of the barony.
One morning, Tarin had announced he would be rid of the artifact that day, much to Wyat’s relief. Many local baronies had daughters which they had offered to Tarin, all of which he turned away, and now, there may be a chance he would come to his senses and keep the bloodline alive. He might pay attention to his land, he might be a ruler and not an obsessed magister.
Had he lived.
The dark power of the artifact was not destroyed, too young and unskilled, the ritual went awry. A dark power emerged and began destroying the guards. To the horror to all those who witnessed, everyone he had slain rose up again and fought at the being’s side. The dark force slew everyone in the barony and was never seen again.
Keller’s Gorge is now considered a cursed place, only the stupid, the bold… or both ever hope to enter that cursed land. All slain by the dead, and in time joining their forces.
Ambitious and possibly reckless, Baroness Catika has purchased the deed to Kellar’s Gorge just last week! Whomever she obtained it from is unknown, but who would want to reign over a land of ghosts?
Setting:
Kellryia Campaign Setting.
Starting Town: Gothway
Notable Towns nearby: Wertsdale, Crestvale, White Rock, Darillia (Capital of Dalris)
Gothway has had to increase their patrols due to tradesmen dying. Their carts have been ransacked and no bodies are found. The increase in hobgoblin activity may be the reason, as Captain Dane claims, but some say otherwise. A patrol has been sent to Zeg, the nearby hobgoblin village, and Chieftan Harrock has had the same occurance happen to him, so he claims. Dane is calling it a bluff and intends to ransack the hobgoblin village.
Destian, the priest of the local temple of Alton, has sent a plea to Crestvale to stop Dane from slaughtering the hobgoblins as they haven't done nothing wrong, he believes.
A local hunter, Yani Swiftwind, intends to deliver the message to Baroness Catika in Crestvale, in hopes that the attacks will stop and the hobgoblins won't be provoked to retaliate.
It is currently spring, which means the land is constantly covered with only a thin layer of snow, due to Gothway's location in the southern region. (Moreso the middle of Kellryia, the continent, but the southern rim of the tundra).
Crestvale, located to the southeast is largely where Kellryia gets it's fresh grown foods as it is the furthest north of all the cultivated land on the continent. With the trade routes under attack, food may become more difficult to obtain.
